Entry Requirements and Application Process

Requirements for applicants

We require applicants to have an upper second BA/BSc (Hons) degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject to our programmes. Applications will be considered from mature students with substantial relevant experience.

If you are a non-native English speaker, or have not studied at an English-speaking University (in an English-speaking country), you will be asked to provide documentary evidence of your English language proficiency. Below are the most common language certificates we accept, along with the level required:

  • IELTS - 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each skill
  • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) - 94, with minimum scores of 21 in listening, 23 in reading and speaking and 24 in writing.
If your qualification is not listed above, please check the full list of Acceptable English Language Qualifications in the University's Taught Postgraduate Admissions Policy.

You will also need to provide the following documents:

  • A copy of your degree certificate and a transcript of your marks (originals or certified copies will be required when you register in Leeds). If you have not yet completed your first degree, you should provide partial transripts detailing the marks you have already gained. If your transcripts are not in English, you should provide an official translation with your transcript.
  • Referee report forms.
  • Two academic references. References can be written/typed on to the report form, or presented on a separate sheet of official headed paper.
  • A personal statement (one side of A4 paper is sufficient)
  • Documentary evidence of your English language proficiency (if English is not your native language) - view details above
Documents can either be uploaded when you apply online, emailed to the SMLC MA admissions team (email: smlcpg@leeds.ac.uk) or sent via post to the address at the foot of this page.
