Here in the Department of East Asian Studies at Leeds you can learn Chinese, Japanese, Thai or Mongol, while gaining a firm understanding of the historical, cultural, political, social, religious and economic contexts in which these languages are spoken. To this end we offer what is probably the widest range of elective modules available at any comparable department in Britain. You can focus upon one subject area in more depth in a Single Honours programme, or study two subject areas in a Joint Honours programme either within our department or combined with one of the many Joint Honours programmes available in other departments and schools. We also offer programmes taught entirely in English. Just click on the programme links below to explore the full range of what we have to offer. Detailed information on undergraduate studies in the department can be found in the Undergraduate Handbook and the Module Handbook. The Undergraduate Handbook is a very important document which all undergraduate students should read carefully. It contains all the information that you need to know about the Department, its staff and departmental procedures such as essay hand-in, attendance monitoring and mitigating circumstances. The Module Handbook gives an overview of all the modules that the Department is offering in 2010/2011 and provides a comprehensive guide to each programme that is run by the Department.
Chinese StudiesChina's increasing prominence in world affairs is obvious to all, but how much do we really know about China? If you want to go beyond the stereotypes and learn more about China's language, history, society, cultures and economic development, Leeds' wide range of options within the programmes listed below could well be what you are looking for. Or you could go beyond China and explore her relations with Japan or South East Asia, relations which have sometimes been difficult, but which have also been mutually enriching.
Japanese StudiesDespite recent economic problems, Japan remains an important player on the world stage, and its culture, from Zen Buddhism to manga cartoons continue to fascinate. In addition to teaching you the Japanese language, our programmes in Japanese allow you to focus on Japanese economics, politics, society and its cultural expressions, or to put more emphasis on Japan's interaction with its neighbours across the Asia-Pacific region. Thai and South East Asian StudiesThe South East Asian nations are inextricably linked both by centuries of trade, cultural and other interaction, but at the same time there can be as much diversity within South East Asian nations as there is between them. As one of the few universities in the UK to offer Thai language, and with particular strengths in South East Asia's politics, development, history and religion, Leeds is one of the foremost institutions for the study of South East Asia in the UK.
Asia Pacific Studies
Encompassing the countries of East and South East Asia, Pacific America and Oceania, and home to over a third of the world's population, the Asia-Pacific region is a region of great cultural, political and economic diversity. Flourishing economies, dynamic trade and spectacular megaprojects exist alongside increasing food insecurity and environmental degradation. Our programmes in Asia-Pacific Studies offer you the opportunity to study this region and its composite nations from historical, economic, political, social and cultural perspectives.
Mongolian StudiesAlthough we do not currently offer a BA programme in Mongolian Studies, we are one of only three universities in the UK at which you can study Mongolian language, history and culture, normally as part of another programme.
