Thai and South East Asian Studies

Ian: Level 1 Student (2006/7)

I chose this course because I love Thailand and wanted to know more about it, including the language, culture and history. Leeds is one of only two universities in the country that offer a Thai course and though it is only in its third year it works brilliantly. Within only six weeks you will be able to read basic Thai and by the end of the second year (which is spent in Thailand) you will likely be conversationaly fluent. I am really enjoying the course so far and am very excited about learning more.

Grace: Level 1 Student (2006/7)

After spending a year in Thailand I was facinated by the colourful culture and friendly people. I decided to study at degree level to gain a deeper understanding of the language and culture. I would like to work and live in Thailand, possibly in media and communications.

The course is at a very manageable rate. I find it an exciting challenge. The teachers have a lot of time for individuals and are always willing to help. I am constantly progressing and learning more about the culture which is keeping my strong interest in the course. I think this is a very fun course with a lot of useful learning of language and culture. I am looking forward to the rest of it!

Sarah: Level 2 Student (2006/7)

The Thai and Southeast Asian course at Leeds University is unique and full of amazing opportunities and experiences. I'm a currently in my third year and enjoying the course very much. It has been an exciting few years, full of challenges but most of all fun.

The department is small and friendly, everyone knows each other, which makes it the perfect learning environment. The year abroad was incredible, something I won’t ever forget. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to live as a student in Thailand and to be completely immersed in the Thai community. A once in a lifetime opportunity!

I met some wonderful teachers and made life-long friends. If you’re lucky you may have the chance to do some Thai dancing too!

Rufus: Level 2 Student (2006/7)

The Thai course has been a great way of learning a lot more about a fascinating country, its culture and people. It's also very rewarding to get to grips with the language, particularly the written script, and spending the 2nd year in Thailand armed with new knowledge was a great experience.

It's difficult at times learning a language outside the country that uses it, but it's definitely worth the effort and I look forward to making the most of the benefits by returning to Thailand as soon as possible!
