Thailand

Students on the Thai and South East Asian Studies degree programmes will spend their second year studying at Chiang Mai University [http://www.cmu.ac.th/index_eng.php] in northern Thailand. During the year abroad students will attend intensive language courses and will also be able to attend lectures conducted in Thai in other subjects.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to develop their conversational and reading skills and will be required, as part of the assessment of the year abroad, to undertake research for a project to be submitted to Leeds University. Students will also be examined on their language work by the host university.

By the end of the year in Thailand, students will be able to communicate effectively with native speakers of Thai, in a variety of contexts, and will be able to read Thai newspapers, and undertake research using Thai sources. Students will have also gained a much deeper understanding of Thai society, culture, Buddhism, politics and development.
